Answer:
There are two reasons why some recruiters may request sending your resume as a Word document versus a PDF:
1. Databases: While most recruitment companies have databases that read resumes in both PDF’s & Word documents, there are a few older databases that can only search and store Word documents.
2. Branding: Some recruiters like to copy and paste relevant content from your Resume into their own branded company template so that all the candidates are presented to their client in a consistent format with their company logo and contact details. They typically also omit candidate contact details to prevent clients bypassing the recruitment agency and dealing direct with candidates (ie. to avoid paying fees).
SEND BOTH: If the recruiter requests your resume as a Word document, we strongly advise sending BOTH a PDF and a Word Document (which version?: Save As: ‘Word 97-2003’ as most businesses run this version of Word, and if they have a newer version it will still easily open ‘Word 97-2003’). The PDF will enable the recruiter to clearly read your Resume during the screening phase (your formatting will be perfect), which will allow you to stand-out and give you an advantage over others, whilst (using the Word document) they are still able to copy and paste your Resume into their own company format. You can be rest assured you will not be penalized for providing both.
